French Fridays With Dorie - Nutella Tartine

Chocolate, thick and oh so sweet
From a spoon, it's you I eat,
You look so good, taste so nice
I'd even eat you on fried rice...
~ Nutella poem, Ninja Girl
January was a write-off as far as blogging is concerned. Here I am thinking February will be much, much better but I've already missed last week's French Fridays recipe, Gorgonzola-Apple Quiche, something I had so wanted to bake as well! Already, I'm running out of excuses as to why I've gone MIA lately...let's just say life has taken over and left me with very little time and energy to focus on my culinary activities and writing. To quote E.B. White, "I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day". Yes, too right, my friend!

Anyway, back to today....I couldn't possibly pass up the chance to make this week's FFWD recipe, Nutella Tartine. Well, it isn't even a recipe per se but an assemblage of several beautiful ingredients we all have in our pantries (and if you don't, you should start questioning if you're really living, you know).

Nutella Tartine is a favorite French after-school treat and apparently - because I hardly drink coffee - it also goes quite well with a hot cup of espresso. All you have to do to make it is warm up several spoonsfuls of Nutella, then drizzle it over buttered, toasted brioche slices. In Pierre HermĂ©'s version as recounted by Dorie in Around My French Table, the toasted bread is slathered with bitter orange marmalade, Nutella and sprinkled on top with chopped hazelnuts and fleur de sel.

Of course, in my version of Nutella Tartine, that would be wholemeal toast spread with a layer of butter, a layer of peach jam (I had run out of marmalade, sadly) and frivolously decorated with thin orange slices, warmed-up Nutella, toasted almonds and pink river salt. These deviations from the original Tartine didn't affect its deliciousness one bit, that much I can assure you.

So VoilĂ ...this week's recipe has been accomplished! Next week's will be a savory one - Mussels and Chorizo with or without Pasta. Oh, that will be a challenge for me as I'm really not that good with all things seafood, or let me rephrase that, all things savory. If you're keen though, come back next week to this same spot to see how I've done. No sorry, don't come back....just come and cook with us in French Fridays with Dorie :).

I've really missed you, Doristahs (my Dorista sistahs and brothahs). Here's wishing all of you a weekend crammed with heaven!

Including the orange slices is brilliant! I'm planning on using apricot preserves for mine. I love apricot and chocolate together. Glad to see you around! I had a similar non-blogging month last November, so I can relate.

Haha, love the poem!
And Nutella makes everything even better, so I am certain your tartine must be heavenly. Well done!

Come back, we miss you! :-) I love how yours looks with the orange slices. I've made this before, and am not in love with it (honestly, I'd rather have nutella on toast and skip the jelly altogether), so I'm using this week to make up for a recipe I missed. You definitely need to get around to the gorgonzola apple quiche eventually. It's wonderful.

Hope life settles down a bit!

"From a spoon, it's you I eat." This poem is so right!!! Nutella is a very delicious, and dangerous ingredient to have in the house:) Thanks for sharing this great recipe.

I really like the poem and I am sure that you more than made up for you missed French Friday with this delicious spin on the Nutella Tartine! Glad you are back, but understandable how life can take you away from blogging. Lovely clicks here!

Yeah I sadly had to make this again because I made it already for when we got to choose a dish. Oh the hardship.... I LOVE this "recipe"

You were missed. Love the addition of orange slices...I'll try that idea tomorrow for breakfast.

What an adorable poem. Looks like you have a budding writer in the family.

We liked this one too. I especially liked how easy it was, as you said, it really doesn't even qualify as a recipe.

What a wonderful idea to add fruit!

OMG you're back!!! I missed you, kinda like a Nutella addict would miss Nutella. See how horrible it has been for me? ;) Reading your description, your take on the recipe sounds much better to me. I am so making this for breakfast tomorrow...or a late night snack.

Snacking can't get better than this- nutella and orange! Perfect!

The orange slices were a good idea--this is one of my favorite parts of FFWD: looking to see what adjustments other people made, especially since I'm pretty much a follow-the-recipe person myself.

The orange slices were so pretty! Peaches .. mmmmm. I bet apricot preserves would be delicious, too.

I love the addition of fresh orange slices, and that clever little poem! Terrific photos. Don't you hate it when life gets in the way of blogging!

Join the club. I've been that way as well. Sometimes life is just that way. This weeks dish sounds simPly divine. I will definitely have to try it.

So now that I'm here can you please tell me how you're able to post your own song on your video? I've been trying to do that but it says I need to convert from iTunes to an mp3. Did you need to do that? If so can you send me a link that explains it. All the ones I've found don't seem to be working. Looking forward to your reply. Have a happy day!

Gorgeous, love it! I agree we should all be 'living life' with special goodies in our pantries;-)
Welcome back and no worries, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Love the photos and the E.B. White quote!

And, we've missed you, too. What I especially like about your Post (besides the poem, of course) was that you added orange slices to the Tartine. Great idea. I might even do that (with the orange marmalade) instead of hazelbuts. Although, second thot, they were good. Maybe I'll just do it all. Glad to have you back.

Glad to see your FFwD again Maya! I used wholemeal bread too and loved every bite. Neat idea to add thin slices of orange in lieu of marmalade. Nope, not frivolous at all!

Glad to see you back this week, Maya. I've missed your posts. Your photos look beautiful, though I didn't really enjoy this one. Also, I really love the E.B. White quote. I'm going to put that over my desk! Have a great week.

We missed your posts but you are back with a blast - awesome photos, adorable poem and yummy switches to the recipe ! You had me hooked at that opening shot with the slices oranges. Actually makes this look "healthy" :) And I am SO with you on Jan and blogging. You would think it would be the perfect time of year to be cooking , posting and commenting but I am struggling to keep up. Adding the Tuesdays with Dorie did not help :) Good luck with the savory dishes.....thank god my guys like mussels or I would have bailed.

So happy to see this post - the bloggy world is a brighter one with you in it, my dear.

I bet you ate a bit more than the one piece of toast you pictured :) I can't wait for the mussels either! I have been really busy too so my posts have been pretty hit or miss!

Hey Maya, It's sooo OK to take a break from blogging, and all the work it entails. I hope all is well with you. That tartine with the pink salt, butter, peach jam looks beyond scrumptious. Girllll.. You should be designing desserts for fine dining in Paris. You soo inspired me like no other.
